Express keys

It is compatible with Windows 7/8/10 (32 or 64-bit), Android 6.0 or above, as well as Mac OS X10.10 or above. It is compatible with most drawing or illustration software like Photoshop, Painter, Illustrator, Clip Studio and more.

The XP-Pen Deco 01 is a stylish slim device that looks fancy. It is only available in black. With only 8mm thickness, the tab is very light to carry and fits in a laptop bag easily. It sits flat on the desk and because of the slim body, your hand will rest easily. It doesn’t slip, thanks to the four rubber feet underneath.

The express keys are lined up on the left-hand side which also has the USB Type-C port. The tab can be rotated 180 degrees and the setting modified for left-handed users as well.

All the express keys are customizable and have a smooth design. They feel flat and are set very firmly on the device so it doesn’t get in your way. They are divided into two sections of four, and each section has one button marked with a ridge, so you know what you’re clicking without looking.

There are four Deco lights marking the edges of the working area that light up when the tab is connected. You can also work in the dark. This just keeps getting better.

The P03 Passive Pen that comes with it has a smooth black body and weighs only 10g. It is light and easy to use and feels no different from holding a pencil. There is no eraser, but two buttons on the side that can be used to switch between pen and eraser mode. These buttons are also customizable!

The tablet connects via the USB cable provided with a USB Type-A connector for the computer end. If your computer does not have any Type-A ports (which is unlikely), you will need to get an adapter. It only requires one cable to connect, so you can easily set it up anywhere. The tab does not require an external power source, so it is no hassle to move around.

It is fairly easy to set up. The drivers can be downloaded from the website. You just have to select your device model, pen model and computer’s operating system to find which drivers you will need. Before that, remember to remove any other graphic tablet drivers previously installed.

The matte finish on the tab provides just enough friction for a paper-like experience. The surface does not scratch as easily as the screen on a pen display, so you don’t need a protector.

The pen is not battery-powered and does not need charging. The different pressure levels work very nicely with the pen and it has tilt support of up to 60 degrees, which is a great additional feature. The pen holder opens up and holds all the replacement nibs, so you don’t need to worry about losing any. It also works as a nib remover.

Pros and Cons

The overall specs of this tablet are impressive.

Here are some things we loved:

  • Design – Super slim and light to carry. And it looks so elegant!
  • Pressure sensitivity – The best feature of this device is pressure sensitivity. Credit goes to both the tab and the pen for this. The tab itself is super sensitive, so even the lightest stroke makes a line, which makes it great for detailed drawing. Additionally, the amount of pressure you put on the pen also appears as darker lines on the drawing.
  • Price – This device is affordable and gives you great value for money.

Check it out for yourself:

However, there are a few things they could have improved:

  • Pen body – Although the pen is easy to use, it would have helped if there was a rubber cover or something similar to improve the grip.
  • Lagging – Some lagging issues were reported by many users such as a significant time gap between creating strokes on the tab and the lines appearing on the screen. This is most likely a software problem.

Although pen displays have become more preferable among artists and illustrators today, graphic tablets (without screen) still have some perks. For instance, you don’t need to worry about parallax that can be distracting. But then again, it’s all about the preference of the artist.

In any case, if you are looking for a graphic tablet, especially if you’re a beginner, this is a really good one.
