Kodi was first launched in 2003 and is managed by the non-profit XMBC Foundation. It can turn just about any gadget into a TV or movie streamer. Unfortunately, Kodi is not on Amazon. Since you can only use apps available on Amazon in your Kindle Fire tablet, you cannot directly install Kodi on it. However, there is a way to get around that issue. We are here to tell you how to install Kodi on Kindle Fire Tablet.
What are your options?
Since Kodi is compatible with a variety of tech devices, you can enjoy it even without a tablet. To get the Kodi experience on your Amazon device, you can do either of three things:
- Install Kodi on your Kindle Fire Tablet using one of the two methods:
- Download Kodi in an APK file and then install it.
- Install Google Play Store in the Kindle tab, since Kodi is available on the Play Store. Then download Kodi from there.
- Install Kodi on Firestick, or
- Install Kodi on Fire TV.
Warning: Kodi should only be used for content to which you have the legal right to access. The XMBC Foundation or Amazon does not advocate piracy.
How to go about it?
Getting Kodi on Kindle Fire tablet
Before you start, make sure your system version can support Kodi. For the app to work properly you need Android 5.0 Lollipop or higher, which is equivalent to Fire OS 5 or higher.
Method 1 – Download and install APK file
Since you cannot download it from Amazon, the easiest way to do it is to download an APK file and install Kodi. Here is how:
Step 1: Go to Settings and tap on Applications.
Step 2: Tap on the slider next to Apps from Unknown Sources. This enables you to use apps downloaded from sources other than the Amazon store.
Step 3: Next, open your browser. You will find Silk Browser preinstalled in your device. Enter “download Kodi for Android” in the address bar and hit search.
Step 4: Among the top search results, you will find the official website: https://kodi.onl/. Tap on the link to enter the site.
Step 5: Scroll and find the option “Download for Android” – click on it. Since the Fire OS is a customized version for Android, the file for Android works perfectly on an Amazon device.
Step 6: You will find options for 32-bit and 64-bit APK files. Download any one of them per your preference. You will also find download instructions on the webpage.
Once the download is complete, you will receive a notification.
Step 7: When you click on the notification, you will be asked whether or not you want to install the app. Choose “install” and wait for your device to do the rest.
Once the installation is complete, you will see a button “open” with which you can directly open the app and start using it. You will find an icon with all your other apps from where you can access Kodi.
Method 2 – Install Google Play Store and then download Kodi
This is a longer method, but it is just as useful since you can get Google Play Store on your Fire tab. This means you can use all the free Android apps that are not on Amazon AppStore.
To get Play Store, you just need to download the APK file for Play Store and three supporting files for it. Here’s how to do it:
Step 1: Go to Settings and tap on Applications.
Step 2: Click on the slider next to Apps from Unknown Sources. This enables you to use apps downloaded from sources other than the Amazon store.
Step 3: Next, you need to download the following APK files on your tab:
You can go to https://www.apkmirror.com/ and search for these files. If you are reading this on your Fire tablet, click on the file names and you will be directly taken to the download page.
You must download and install all the files in the given order, keeping Play Store for the very end.
Step 4: When you go to the download page, you will see the button “Download APK” – click on that. You will see a pop-up at the bottom, asking for confirmation – choose “OK”. Do the same for each file.
Step 5: You will receive a notification for each file that has been downloaded. Then, click on the notification. When the next screen appears asking if you want to install the files, press “install”. Remember to maintain the order.
If you do not receive notifications for each file, you can find them here:
- Go to Docs from your app section,
- Tap the tab that says Local Storage,
- Go to the folder that says Download,
- You will find the APK files here, click on the files to get to the install page.
Step 6: You will see another screen asking for confirmation, so press “install” again, and wait till all the files complete the installation.
Once they have been installed, you will find the Google Play Store icon among your other apps. You can access the entire Play Store from there.
Step 7: Tap on the Play Store icon and sign in using your Google account.
Step 8: Search for Kodi and click on the app you see in the search results. Press “install”.
Once the app is installed, you will receive a notification. You can now use Kodi on your Fire tablet.
Getting Kodi on Firestick
Connect the device to your TV or monitor and follow these steps to learn how to setup Kodi on Firestick:
Step 1: Using the remote to navigate through your options, go to Settings on your Firestick.
Step 2: Scroll down and you will find an option named Device – select it.
Step 3: In Device, look for Developer Options – select it.
Step 4: You will find options for ADB Debugging and Apps from Unknown Sources – turn on both. You might see a warning informing you of the risks of enabling this and options to “cancel” or “turn on”. Click “turn on” to continue.
Step 5: Go back to the Home page and scroll left until you come across the Search option.
Step 6: Search for ‘Downloader’. When the app icon appears, select it to start the installation. This is a free app you can find in the Amazon AppStore.
Step 7: When the installation is complete, you will see an icon of the app. Click on it and enter the URL of the file you want to download. Then press “download”.
Step 8: You will be asked if you want to open this link in the browser. If so, select “yes”. You will be taken to the Kodi website.
Step 9: Find the option for Android (icon), and select that. You will find multiple versions of Kodi available for download.
Step 10: Select the version you want to download (we recommend 32-bit).
Step 11: Once the download is complete, you will be asked if you want to install it. Select “install”, and Kodi will be installed on your device.
After the installation, you will be asked if you want to open the app. Once you do, you can enjoy Kodi on your Firestick.
Getting Kodi on Fire TV
Since the Amazon Firestick and Fire TV have very similar functions, the method to install Kodi on both devices is the same. You can follow steps 1 to 11 from the above method to install Kodi on Fire TV.
Kodi also allows you to stream media from external storage. You can directly plug in your external hard drive or pen drive to the USB port on Fire TV and access your media from there.
Amazon devices are great, but their software has clear limitations. Many popular applications are not available on the AppStore and this can significantly discourage customers from buying an Amazon device. Let’s hope that more of these apps become available to everyone as they update their software. For now, you can follow these hacks.
