Best Tablets Under $200 for Those Who Want Value for Money – But Not a Lot of Money [2020 Update]

Tablets are becoming more powerful and in turn, more popular these days. Yet, they are far from replacing all your other devices. Since they cannot fully replace a computer, tablets are often kept as secondary devices. Or something to just use while travelling.

If there are only a limited number of things you want to do on a tab, how much would you spend on it? Wouldn’t you love to have an extra device with great features without having to spend a lot? I know I would.

So, in case you agree, we have compiled a list of the best tablets under $200 just for you.

Surprised to find Samsung on a list of budget devices? We were too. The Galaxy Tab A comes in two sizes and the smaller one is the affordable one. There are also two versions of these – with or without a SIM card slot. This 8.0” (203.2 mm) display has a nice silver metallic body with only 8 mm thickness. It is slim and light and the best device to carry when travelling.

It has a quad-core processor and overall performance is smooth. There is hardly any lagging, despite the low 2 GB RAM. Its 8.0” (203.2 mm) display is pleasant to look at. It uses TFT (thin-film-transistor) technology to improve image quality like color and contrast. The resolution is just right for the size of the display and images look quite bright and clear.

The main camera takes some pretty decent pictures. There is 32 GB of built-in storage, but you can expand that, so no worries there. The battery life is pretty good for a budget device. This is not Samsung’s best work but is definitely the best Samsung tablet under $200.

Amazon deserves some serious credit for what they have done with the Fire tablet range. The Fire HD 8 is an 8.0” (203.2 mm) display, which is a great performer despite the mediocre specs (don’t be fooled by them). The body is slim and light. The material is plastic but quite solid, so it does not damage easily.

It has a quad-core processor and 1.5 GB RAM, and the Fire OS is pretty easy to use. The display looks pretty good and the colors are vibrant. This device is ideal for reading, web browsing, and watching videos. The processor is not exactly suitable for gaming, but you can still play some.

Battery life is average and the camera quality is poor. That may be the only downside to this tablet. Yet, you might be able to forgive that given that it’s priced so low. This is a great choice if you have not used a tablet before or have children who might snatch it from your hands.

Here are the specifications:

  • Dimensions: 8.42 x 5.03 x 0.38 inches (214 x 128 x 9.7 mm)
  • Weight: 0.81 pounds (369 g)
  • Display size: 8.0” (203.2 mm - diagonal)
  • Display type: IPS LCD
  • Resolution: 1280 x 800 pixels
  • RAM: 1.5 GB
  • Internal Storage: 16/ 32 GB (expandable)
  • Camera: 2 MP (main), VGA (front)
  • Battery: 3210 mAh
Fire HD 8 Tablet (8" HD Display, 16 GB) - Yellow (Previous Generation - 8th)
8" HD display; 16 or 32 GB of internal storage (up to 400 GB with microSD); 1.3 GHz quad-core processor

Lenovo tablets are often great. However, let me introduce you to the best 8-inch tablet under $200 you can buy. The Lenovo Tab 4 comes in two sizes and both have great features. This 8” (203.2 mm) device has a quad-core processor and 2 GB RAM. It runs Android 7.0 Nougat but it cannot be confirmed whether or not that will be upgradable.

The tab is slim and light and comes in two color options – Slate Black or Polar White. The system is pretty responsive and does not slow down even when multiple apps are open. The battery life goes up to a maximum of 20 hours, so this is the one for you if you often forget your charger.

Internal storage can be expanded up to 128 GB, so get the biggest memory card you can find. The camera results are decent. You probably won’t be using that much anyway. Overall, for the current price, this compact tablet is a great deal.

Here are the specifications:

  • Dimensions: 8.31 x 4.88 x 0.32 inches (211 x 124 x 8.2 mm)
  • Weight: 0.68 pounds (310 g)
  • Display size: 8.0” (203.2 mm)
  • Display type: IPS LCD
  • Resolution: 1280 x 800 pixels
  • RAM: 2 GB
  • Internal Storage: 16 GB (expandable)
  • Camera: 5.0 MP (main), 2.0 MP (front)
  • Battery: 4850 mAh

This one has a larger display, is more upgraded, and a bit expensive. However, its current price falls within our range and hence, this should not be left out. This is a 10.1” (256.54 mm) display with the same design and color options. The resolution could have been a bit higher considering the larger size, but it’s still pretty good.

Other features are the same as its 8” (203.2 mm) sibling – including the RAM, storage, camera, and processor. It does run on Android 7.1 Nougat, but that’s not much of an upgrade. What is different is the much larger 7000 mAh battery. Although a larger screen does require a bigger battery, this is a significant improvement.

Here are the specifications:

  • Dimensions: 9.72 x 6.69 x 0.33 inches (247 x 170 x 8.5 mm)
  • Weight: 1.12 pounds (506 g)
  • Display size: 10.1” (256.54 mm)
  • Display type: IPS LCD
  • Resolution: 1280 x 800 pixels
  • RAM: 2 GB
  • Internal Storage: 16 GB (expandable)
  • Camera: 5.0 MP (main), 2.0 MP (front)
  • Battery: 7000 mAh

This is probably Lenovo’s most attractive range. The Yoga Tab 3 has a slim black body with a built-in stand. The device is light, portable, and looks chic.

It has a quad-core processor and 1 GB RAM. The Android version is pretty old and probably will not be further updated – Android 5.1 Lollipop. This is the only major flaw in this device. The screen resolution is pretty good and the display is pleasant to look at. It has two front-facing speakers with Dolby Atmos surround sound. So watching movies and videos on this tab is a delight.

It has an 8.0 MP rotatable camera, which means both your main and selfie camera have the same quality. The camera results are pretty good too. The battery life is great on this – gives you up to 20 hours of usage. For this price, I believe this is well-packed with features.

Here are the specifications:

  • Dimensions: 8.27 x 5.75 x 0.11~0.28 inches (210 x 146 x 3~7.0 mm)
  • Weight: 1.04 pounds (472 g)
  • Display size: 8.0” (203.2 mm)
  • Display type: IPS LCD
  • Resolution: 1280 x 800
  • RAM: 1 GB
  • Internal Storage: 16 GB
  • Camera: 8.0 MP (rotatable)
  • Battery: 6200 mAh

The ASUS ZenPad 8 is an underrated device. This tablet has a unique patterned back, which provides a solid grip and doesn’t let it slip when using with one hand. The size is comfortable enough to easily hold in one hand too. It is slim and light and perfect for travel.

The Zen UI, along with the Android system, is easy to use. You get a variation of 1 or 2 GB RAM and a concurrent variation of 16 or 32 GB of internal memory. Unlike the RAM, you can easily extend the memory since there is a dedicated slot for a micro SD card. The screen resolution is pretty good and the brightness gets very high. To add to that, the DTS-HD premium sound technology makes watching videos on this more fun.

Although the size of the battery is average, you get decent usage from it since the RAM is quite low. Camera quality is average, but the intelligent contrast and sharpness optimization make a difference to the final images. Overall performance is great – just remember what you paid for it and you wouldn’t have any complaints.

Here are the specifications:

  • Dimensions: 8.23 x 4.84 x 0.33 inches (209 x 123 x 8.5 mm)
  • Weight: 0.77 pounds (350 g)
  • Display size: 8.0” (203.2 mm)
  • Display type: IPS LCD
  • Resolution: 1280 x 800
  • RAM: 1 or 2 GB
  • Internal Storage: 8/ 16 GB (expandable)
  • Camera: 5.0 MP (main), 2.0 MP (front)
  • Battery: 4000 mAh

Alternate Option (Just Over $200)

If you can adjust your budget a little, there is another great device we would recommend. The Huawei MediaPad T5 is a slim device that comes in three elegant colors – Black, Champagne Gold, and Mist Blue.

It has an octa-core processor and 2/ 3 GB of RAM. Its operating system, EMUI 8.0 is based on Android 8.0 Oreo. The user interface is smooth and fast. The full HD Vivid display and dual speakers make it ideal for multimedia. The 10.1” (256.54 mm) screen has a great resolution, and you can enjoy pretty much everything on it – reading, web browsing, or watching videos.

The camera and battery life are not extraordinary, but are definitely above average. If you can afford to loosen your purse strings a little, definitely check out the MediaPad T5.

Here are the specifications:

  • Dimensions: 9.57 x 6.46 x 0.31 inches (243 x 164 x 7.8 mm)
  • Weight: 1.01 pounds (460 g)
  • Display size: 10.1" (256.54 mm)
  • Display type: Full HD
  • Resolution: 1920 x 1200 pixels
  • RAM: 2 or 3 GB
  • Internal Storage: 16/ 32 GB (expandable)
  • Camera: 5.0 MP (main), 2.0 MP (front)
  • Battery: 5200 mAh

Final Thoughts

You can get a pretty good deal in the $200 range, although there are tablets available for even less. However, if you can go a bit above this budget, you will get a lot more than you expect. That being said, as far as budget devices go, these really stand out.
