“Budget device” is starting to sound like pity wrapped in a compliment these days. It should be the other way around. Also, because budget devices are becoming so popular, phone companies can manufacture high-quality products at comparatively low costs.

You no longer need to spend a lot to get a great device. Find your next phone from our selection of the best phones under $200.

Xiaomi Mi A3

Our Picks

You should keep in mind that you won’t get everything on a budget device. While you may get more than your expectations, you will have to accept the shortcomings as well. Even the best smartphone under $200 will have fewer features than the $300 range. You can expect to get a good battery life, good performance, expandable storage, and if you’re lucky, a good camera. We considered overall features and found these to be value picks:

Motorola’s entry into the smartphone group is what you can call ‘better late than never’. They joined a little late, but we are so glad they did. Motorola has been making quality devices in an affordable range for a few years now. The Moto G7 Play is not just for play. Released in 2019, this phone focuses on all the important features.

Check out the device specs:

  • Dimensions: 5.80 x 2.81 x 0.31 in (147.3 x 71.5 x 8 mm)
  • Weight: 0.33 lbs (149 g)
  • Screen size: 5.7 in (144.8 mm)
  • Display Type: IPS LCD (HD+ Max Vision display)
  • Resolution: 1512 x 720 pixels
  • RAM: 2 GB
  • Internal Memory: 32 GB (expandable)
  • Operating system: Android 9 Pie (upgradable)
  • Camera: 13 MP (rear), 8 MP (front)
  • Battery capacity: 3000 mAh

The device has a sturdy casing with rounded edges. Even though the screen is pretty large, the phone fits well in the hand – but is not fit for one-handed use. The LCD display is nice, but not the sharpest.

Currently running Android 9 Pie, this device will receive an update for Android 10. The RAM is just 2 GB but there is an octa-core processor, so performance is pretty great. The 32 GB internal storage is further expandable. So if you get further system updates, do not worry about having enough space for downloads.

There is a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner that is fast and accurate. It is perfectly placed and very responsive. You can also use the face-unlock feature to lock your phone, although it’s not the safest option. The 3000 mAh battery gives a 40-hour usage with low to medium usage.

Pros:

  • The fingerprint scanner is pretty high quality given the price.
  • Camera results are great and the auto-focus works very well.
  • Battery life is great.
  • You can expand the internal storage.

 Cons:

  • The screen resolution is not the best.
  • This device isn’t the best choice for multi-tasking. The low RAM kind of gets in the way.

Best overall performance

Xiaomi is known for its budget devices and has done a pretty good job so far. They release smartphones in various price ranges and every new model is better than the previous one. The Redmi Note 7 has a sleek metallic body and a dot notch display design. It both looks and feels premium in the hand.

Check out the device specs:

  • Dimensions: 6.27 x 2.96 x 0.32 in (159.2 x 75.2 x 8.1 mm)
  • Weight: 0.41 lbs (186 g)
  • Screen size: 6.3 in (160 mm)
  • Display Type: IPS LCD
  • Resolution: 1080 x 2340 pixels
  • RAM: 3 or 4 or 6 GB
  • Internal Memory: 32 or 64 or 128 GB (expandable)
  • Operating system: Android 9 Pie, MIUI 11
  • Camera: 12 MP+2 MP (dual rear camera), 13MP (front)
  • Battery capacity: 4000 mAh

The Redmi Note 7 runs Android 9 Pie and Xiaomi’s very own MIUI 11 simultaneously. It is expected to get updates for both. You get to choose from a variation of 3, 4, or 6 GB of RAM. There is an octa-core processor that makes the user experience fast and smooth.

The internal storage on this goes up to 128 GB and can be further expanded. There is a dedicated slot for a micro SD card, so you will never have a shortage of space. You can carry all your music and media with you at all times. There is also a 3.5 mm headphone jack, which is difficult to find these days.

The main camera takes some pretty great pictures. The dual-lens allows you to choose your custom angle when taking photos. The front camera is great for selfies and detects your face with precision – for Face Unlock feature. But if you have security concerns, you can always use the rear-mounted fingerprint scanner.

The non-removable battery charges up real quick and gives you long-lasting support. For the given price, this device is packed with a lot of features. This can easily be labeled one of the best budget Android phones in the market now.

Pros:

  • It’s great fun to take photos with both the rear and front cameras. Images are of high quality.
  • Battery life is very good.
  • Overall system performance is more than satisfactory, including multi-tasking.
  • You can expand the internal storage.

Cons:

  • The camera gets scratched easily since the camera sticks out.
  • The metallic body looks great but catches fingerprints very easily. This can be solved with a phone cover.

Best camera

This device is Xiaomi’s attempt to target customers who admire Pixel phones but cannot afford them. The Mi A3 looks very chic, with the metallic frame and glass back. It comes in three colors – More Than White, Kind Of Grey, and Not Just Blue. It doesn’t look like a Pixel, but inside, it feels like one (well, almost).

Check out the device specs:

  • Dimensions: 6.04 x 2.83 x 0.33 in (153.5 x 71.9 x 8.5 mm)
  • Weight: 0.38 lbs (173.8 g)
  • Screen size: 6.09 in (154.7 mm)
  • Display Type: Super AMOLED
  • Resolution: 720 x 1560 pixels
  • RAM: 4 or 6 GB
  • Internal Memory: 64 or 128 GB
  • Operating system: Android 9 Pie (upgradable)
  • Camera: 48 MP (triple, ultra-wide-angle rear camera), 32 MP (front)
  • Battery capacity: 4030 mAh

That is because of Android One, which is pretty close to stock Android. This is one of the most appealing features of this device. You get a variation of 4 or 6 GB RAM and 64 or 128 GB internal storage to accompany it. It runs on Android 9 Pie and will be receiving updates. The layout and look of the apps and software give that pure Android feel.

Inside, there is an octa-core processor and outside, there is the super AMOLED screen. Even though the resolution is not very high, the images look crisp and vibrant. The triple-lens camera takes some pretty great pictures, as well the 32 MP front camera. The camera quality is much better than some of the older models.

The fingerprint sensor is optical, which is not as responsive as the physical one. Other than that, this phone has almost no performance issues the battery life is also very good.

Pros:

  • The build quality is great. The design is modern yet familiar.
  • Both rear and front cameras produce good quality photos and have interesting built-in features, like, Panorama selfie.
  • The phone has long battery life.

Cons:

  • The battery supports fast charging, but a quick charger does not come in the box.
  • Optical fingerprint sensors are a little awkward to use since you cannot always place your finger accurately.
  • Since this an Android One device, you do not get to enjoy MIUI with it. Although some of you might prefer that – so this can be a pro too.

It is still a surprise to see Samsung on a list of ‘budget’ phones. The new A-series released in 2019 and Samsung deserves credit for the great job they’ve done. Most of the models have almost all the latest features and come at a very reasonable price. The A20 is a fine device with some great features.

Check out the device specs:

  • Dimensions: 6.24 x 2.94 x 0.31 in (158.4 x 74.7 x 7.8 mm)
  • Weight: 0.37 lbs (169 g)
  • Screen size: 6.4 in (162.6 mm)
  • Display Type: Super AMOLED
  • Resolution: 720 x 1560 pixels
  • RAM: 3 GB
  • Internal Memory: 32 GB (expandable)
  • Operating system: Android 9 Pie, One UI
  • Camera: 13 MP+ 5 MP (ultrawide rear camera), 8 MP (front)
  • Battery capacity: 4000 mAh

The Galaxy A20 is powered by Android 9 Pie, which will receive Android 10 updates as well. Simultaneously you will also be able to experience Samsung’s One UI. It has 3 GB RAM with an octa-core processor, and 32 GB of internal storage. This is further expandable up to 512 GB.

The dual-lens camera does a pretty good job of taking landscape photos. The front camera is also decent. You also get a headphone jack and the classic Samsung headphones that come in the box.

The rear-mounted fingerprint scanner is positioned a bit high up, which might be uncomfortable for some people. The scanner works well, albeit a bit slow compared to its competitors, for example, Motorola. The device supports fast-charging and the 4000 mAh battery gives about 14 hours of continuous usage. With medium to low usage, it will last you throughout the day easily.

Pros:

  • The camera quality is great.
  • The overall layout is user-friendly and the dual OS experience is quite smooth.
  • It has great battery life.
  • You can expand the internal storage.

Cons:

  • The screen resolution is not too great.
  • The fingerprint scanner is a bit oddly placed.

Nokia never really got back the fame it earned with the classic 3310. They couldn’t grab a lot of attention with their smartphones. But here’s a surprise – they made some great devices in affordable prices. The Nokia 4.2 was released in 2019. It has a simplistic design and is powered by Android One.

Check out the device specs:

  • Dimensions: 5.87 x 2.81 x 0.33 in (149 x 71.3 x 8.4 mm)
  • Weight: 0.35 lbs (161 g)
  • Screen size: 5.71 in (145 mm)
  • Display Type: IPS LCD
  • Resolution: 720 x 1520 pixels
  • RAM: 2 or 3 GB
  • Internal Memory: 16 or 32 GB (expandable)
  • Operating system: Android 10
  • Camera: 13 MP+ 2 MP (dual rear camera), 8 MP (front)
  • Battery capacity: 3000 mAh

The device has a glossy finish with a physical fingerprint scanner at the back. It is well placed and is quite responsive. You can also use Face Unlock with the 8 MP front camera to lock your device. The dual-lens camera takes some pretty decent snaps too.

Even though the phone is powered by Android One, it is doubtful whether it will receive further updates. It is currently running on Android 10. It has an octa-core processor and you can pick from 2 or 3 GB RAM. However, the device performance is average.

You get an internal storage of up to 32 GB, but it can be expanded. There is a designated button for Google Assistant, although I personally see no need for it. The battery life is pretty good, although not the best. Overall, this thing does very well for a budget device.

Pros:

  • The Android One system is smooth and easy and to use. The layout is clean and modern.
  • The design is elegant and modern. Build quality is very good.
  • Internal storage is expandable.

Cons:

  • System performance is average. This phone is not suitable for heavy gaming or too much multi-tasking.
  • The glossy exterior catches fingerprints easily.

This is a slightly older model but was quite popular after its release in 2017. The Nokia 6.1 is mostly known for its unique design. It has a matte finish at the back and a contrasting metallic frame. There are three color combinations of the phone and the metallic rim – black and copper, white and iron, blue, and gold. This contrast framing is seen around the edges, the camera, and the fingerprint scanner.

Check out the device specs:

  • Dimensions: 5.86 x 2.98 x 0.32 in (148.8 x 75.8 x 8.2 mm)
  • Weight: 0.38 lbs (172 g)
  • Screen size: 5.5 in (140 mm)
  • Display Type: IPS LCD
  • Resolution: 1080 x 1920 pixels
  • RAM: 3 or 4 GB
  • Internal Memory: 32 or 64 GB (expandable)
  • Operating system: Android 8.1 (upgradable)
  • Camera: 16 MP (rear), 8 MP (front)
  • Battery capacity: 3000 mAh

It looks unique and works well too. The device has an octa-core processor and a variation of 3 or 4 GB RAM. It was initially launched with Android 8.1 Oreo, but is expected to get updates up to Android 10. Overall, the performance is satisfactory.

Even though this phone does not have an AMOLED screen, the display looks pretty good. This was before the more popular notch display started showing up, so there are somewhat thick bezels on the top and bottom. The screen resolution is good and colors are pleasant. Camera results are also pretty good, although nothing extraordinary.

The fingerprint scanner is well placed at the back and quite responsive. It only has a single speaker, so the audio does not get very loud. But you can always use headphones for that. The battery life is good enough for this capacity. This device will not exactly amaze you, but won’t disappoint either.

Pros:

  • The unique design is what attracts your attention instantly.
  • Camera quality is pretty good.
  • Internal storage is expandable.

Cons:

  • There are no stereo speakers. Audio quality is average.
  • You get double SIM slots, but you can only use the second one if you don’t have a micro SD card.

Alternative:

Best battery

You can get a lot of good phones under 200. However, just a bit above the $200 margin, there are several better options. Among those, the Moto G8 Power does stand out. It has a nice design but is slightly bulky owing to the large battery. You get two color options to choose from – Smoke Black and Capri Blue.

Check out the device specs:

  • Dimensions: 6.14 x 2.98 x 0.38 in (156 x 75.8 x 9.6 mm)
  • Weight: 0.43 lbs (197 g)
  • Screen size: 6.4 in (162.6 mm)
  • Display Type: IPS LCD (FHD+ Max Vision display)
  • Resolution: 2300 × 1080
  • RAM: 4 GB
  • Internal Memory: 64 GB (expandable)
  • Operating system: Android 10
  • Camera: 16 MP+ 2 MP+ 8 MP+ 8 MP (quad lens rear camera), 16 MP (front)
  • Battery capacity: 5000 mAh

This is still a budget device and it’s a great one. The phone has 4 GB RAM and an octa-core processor. The system performance is really impressive. It runs Android 10 but is expected to get more system updates in the future. To hold all the expected updates, it has a built-in storage of 64 GB, which can be further expanded.

The display resolution is incredible. Images appear crisp and vibrant. Those taken with this camera – even more so. The quad-lens camera is prepared for any scenario. The ultra-wide lens lets you cover a much broader area – be it a landscape or a party of 50, you can capture it all.

You also get dual stereo speakers and Dolby audio. The fingerprint scanner at the back is nicely hidden under the Motorola logo and is fast and responsive. The battery life is also great and it supports quick charging.

This device does not go far from the $200 range but manages to give you a lot more than you could expect. If your budget is not set in stone, definitely check this one out.

Pros:

  • The display looks great.
  • Battery is excellent. The device feels slightly heavy because of the large battery, but it is definitely worth the weight.

Cons:

  • The front camera is positioned at one corner, which is a bit awkward at times.
  • There is no dedicated slot for micro SD. So you have to pick between using dual SIM or expanding your storage.
